The UKStarcraft.net Amateur Brackets Tournament is a new tournament, launched January 21st by UKStarcraft.net and is a chance for new players (Bronze to Platinum) to enter and get a feel for Starcraft 2 Tournaments. This was the first ever tournament in the series and naturally I, and some of the other SCRedditors, just had to enter. Considering the low amount of publicity, the turn out was pretty good with more than 20 players showing up and a bunch more watching and taking note. In the end players of all leagues- Bronze through to Platinum- took part and faced off against each other.
Both reims and myself from SCReddit.EU took part. My first matchup was vs Ironhammers from the UK, a bronze player who I, as Platinum, had no trouble beating in a quick TvT 3 rax push on Xel’Naga and another on Metal. He wished me gl in the next round-ups and we even formed a partnership including a mention on his gaming website http://ironhammers.org
My next matchup was vs sYan, another UK resident, this time Protoss. In the first game he went for an early expansion and I managed to do enough damage with my 2 rax pressure to win me the game. I won this round 2-0 and went on to round 3 against VampireLady.
UKStarcraft.net Amateur Cup #1 Bracket Results:
VampireLady, a Platinum Zerg player from the Netherlands, went for an early Roach push in our first game on Xel’Naga and managed to take out a supply depot and a few marines, luckily I held off with a few marauders and went on to take the game. In the next matchup she went for a 15 Hatch and seeing that I went for 3 rax pressure. She managed to hold it off and eventually crush my main. This put us on even footing, and being extremely nervous going into the finals I knew it was all to play for. Again she went for 15 Hatch, this time I knew I could do more damage than I had before and sent 5 marines and 2 SCVs to throw down 2 bunkers blocking her ramp while I took out her natural. This put me in a strong lead and as I followed up with a stimmed army into the main she gave me a little BM and quit. Despite the BM I felt good, I had fought hard and made it through to the finals!
Meanwhile, reims was playing vs the Danish janlol. Since reims was also part of SCReddit.EU I would’ve loved to wish him luck and fight him in the finals, but it wasn’t to be as janlol took it 2-0. So this put me against janlol, a Platinum Protoss player and the favorite to win the tournament. I fought my hardest and did pretty good, but he managed to take me out pretty quick in the first game. For our second match we spawned in close positions on Metalopolis and knowing I had to win this and the next game I went for a 3 rax all in timing attack. As I approached his main base I knew it was all or nothing, I stimmed and ran up the ramp. He got off a great pair of ForceFields, trapping a bunch of my marauders on the ramp and most of my army out of his base. He took out a whole bunch of them with a single immortal and though it was close (he even pulled the majority of his probes to hold on) he held it off which put me behind economically and eventually he counter attacked and won.
So, while we didn’t win the cup, we came second and third and made a number of good connections and friends with a bunch of amateur players from all over Europe and saw in the start of the UKStarcraft.net amateur cup. Congratulations to janlol and gg to everyone who took part. The cup will be ongoing and any Bronze to Platinum level players who want to get to grips on what playing in a tournament feels like, I suggest you sign up for the cup next Friday: http://ukstarcraft.net/category/weekly-cups/amateur-friday-cups/
Good luck and good game!
